Browsable collection of DESIGN.md files for AI agents to generate consistent UI

getdesign.md is a browsable frontend for the awesome-design-md GitHub collection. It curates DESIGN.md files extracted from real, well-known websites. DESIGN.md is a structured markdown file that captures a website's complete design system: colors, typography, components, spacing, elevation, and responsive behavior. Drop one into your project root, point your AI coding agent at it, and get UI that matches the original design with high fidelity.
The concept was introduced by Google Stitch. These are not official design systems from the listed companies. They are curated starting points inspired by publicly visible design patterns, useful as inspiration and a practical foundation for building similar-looking UIs.
The site and the repo are run by the VoltAgent team. The awesome-design-md repo is MIT licensed and has about 120k GitHub stars. The website catalog lists 550+ sites, including Stripe, Linear, Vercel, Notion, Apple, Airbnb, Spotify, Cursor and Claude.

What's inside a DESIGN.md

Each file follows Google Stitch's format with a few extra sections, so an agent gets both the values and the reasoning behind them:
Section
What the agent learns
Visual theme and atmosphere
The overall mood: dense and technical, airy and editorial, playful
Color palette and roles
Every color with its job: background, surface, accent, border, text
Typography rules
Font families, the type scale, weights, line heights
Component stylings
Buttons, cards, inputs, navigation and their states
Layout principles
Grid, spacing scale, whitespace
Depth and elevation
Shadows, borders, layering
Do's and don'ts
What breaks the look
Responsive behavior
How layouts change on smaller screens
Agent prompt guide
Ready-made instructions for the agent
On the site, every design is rendered as a live preview: the palette above, the type scale, buttons and cards. In the GitHub repo, each design also comes with preview.html and preview-dark.html, so you can see the tokens rendered before you use them.

How to use it

  1. Open getdesign.md and pick a site whose look is close to what you want.
  1. Add its DESIGN.md to your project root. Each design page has a one-line command for that, for example npx getdesign@latest add linear.app, or a Download DESIGN.md button.
  1. Tell your agent to follow it, for example: "Build the pricing page. Follow DESIGN.md for colors, type, spacing and components."
  1. For a lasting rule, reference the file from AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md, so every session picks it up.
It works with any agent that reads files: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, and plain ChatGPT or Claude chats if you paste the file in.

getdesign.md alternatives

  • Write your own DESIGN.md. If your product already has a look, ask the agent to extract one from your codebase: Tailwind config, CSS variables, existing components. That beats any borrowed file for an existing product.
  • Impeccable. Design skills and anti-pattern commands that teach the agent design judgment instead of copying a specific site.
  • Google Stitch. Google's AI design tool, where the DESIGN.md format comes from. It generates designs and exports the file.
  • shadcn/ui themes. Fine if you only need colors and radii on top of standard components.

FAQ

Is getdesign.md free?
Yes, the catalog and the GitHub repo are free and MIT licensed. The site also sells extras like starter kits and custom DESIGN.md files for your own site.
Are these the official design systems of Stripe, Linear and the others?
No. They are extracted from publicly visible CSS and pages. Use them as a starting point, not as a license to clone a brand.
What's the difference between DESIGN.md and AGENTS.md?
AGENTS.md tells the agent how to work on your code: commands, conventions, structure. DESIGN.md tells it how the UI should look. Most projects that care about design use both.
